Last spring I shared a list of some networking nevers. I wanted to share a few more items on my list of networking NOT to-dos because it’s so easy to fall into some dangerous habits if you’re not careful and deliberate with your networking strategy.
Get started, or rather, don’t start these networking pitfalls.
- DON’T come on too strong.
I know you’ve perfected your “elevator speech,” but pump the brakes, speed racer! When someone says “Hello, what do you do?,” don’t over do it. Simply answer their question and see what they do in return. As you ease into the conversation, you can work in the specifics. Use your elevator speech as a guide, not an immediate response to any and all questions your encounter throughout the event. People can tell the difference between a conversation and a recital!
- DON’T sell.
It’s called a networking event, not a sales meeting and they are two very different things. Remember, this is a chance to get to know people, what they do, and what they are looking for in a partnership. The follow up (coming up in #4) is where you’ll get down to the nitty gritty.
- DON’T interrupt.
No one likes to be interrupted. Be the person who listens and makes others feel empowered. If people feel their voice is heard, they are more likely to want to work with you. As a bonus, it gives you the chance to hear what people are looking for and to consider how a potential relationship could move forward in the future.
- DON’T forget to follow-up.
Coincidentally, this is also my #1 networking tip. Follow up, follow up, follow up! Consider the networking event your opportunity to build your lead list. The real work comes AFTER the event has ended when you follow up with your networking leads and really weed out who is a good referral partner or business lead.
