A recent study found that 30% of website traffic is generated from social media. Is your social media hitting that mark? Regardless of how many platforms you use or what your company size is, social media is a huge piece of the marketing strategy pie. As such, your efforts shouldn’t be wasted!
Here are three of some of my favorite social media tips I encourage everyone to follow:
- If you don’t have time, don’t open another account.
In my opinion, this is a company’s #1 mistake. There is no sense in having a twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, instagram, Pinterest and on and on accounts just for the sake of having them. If a potential customer gets to it, it’s not doing anything for you and, in fact, it can deter people from working with you. Social media is a quick, easy access tool for people just looking for information. If they don’t find what they are looking for, they’ll look elsewhere.
- Be an expert.
This seems obvious, right? You are an expert and your social media should reflect that. Be a resource so that people seek you out first with questions. Remember, though, you don’t always have to be serious. You can share funny, or even a little off, stories as long as your overall message is consistent and relevant. Besides, sometimes people just need to laugh and they’ll remember you for that, too.

3. Be mindful of your audience.
This is another idea that seems common sense, but I always like to revisit it. The way you communicate on twitter is different than Facebook. Besides the obvious character limit on twitter, take out ALL of the hashtags once you’re on a different platform. A few #hereandthere, #strategicallyplaced are okay, but #youarenotonfacebooktoreadhashtags. You can share the same message, but appropriate delivery is key.
Now I know there are millions of social media tips out there, so what to do? Keep it simple – don’t stretch yourself too far, be relevant and target your audience. Happy marketing!
