In managing and trying to grow your social media presence, one of the biggest challenges is finding your target audience. It’s not enough to just post riveting content (with the help of your content calendar). You will only real gain traction with your efforts if you are reaching the right people, at the right time, and in the right place. Let’s find ‘em!

  1. Outline your target demographics. You’re not going to catch a deer with a fishing pole. In other words, you have to know who you’re looking for in order to target them effectively. Consider your ideal customers age, gender, income, etc. in defining your audience. Also, be sure to consider both your current audience and prospective clients. The more detailed you are, the better chance you have at finding the right people to grow your business.

  2. Develop your social media profiles. Now that you’ve defined your target demographics, use that information to determine where you are most likely to find them. There are tons of options, so don’t get overwhelmed here. If you focus on growing your presence on the top 2-3 networks for your audience, you’ll find a good balance.

  3. Create your content. You’ve been on different social media platforms. You know there are different types of content, in terms of style and effectiveness, across platforms. Depending on the networks you have decided to target you’ll need to thoughtfully and creatively develop your appropriate content. This could include a variety of text, blogs, images, or videos designed to reach your target audience. Remember, regardless of audience of platform, your content needs to provide value.

  4. Continuously monitor your social media presence. It’s not enough to define your demographics, set up your accounts, and schedule your content. You have to engage with your social media efforts, both in targeted communication and continued monitoring and development. Be sure to make time to like, comment, or share posts from other profiles. Be responsive to communication from your audience and respond to comments and questions in a timely manner. For the long term, pay attention to trends, failures, and successes. Which posts were highly engaging? Which ones fell flat? What are your competitors having success with?
