Life as an entrepreneur has some unique challenges. You likely chose to be an entrepreneur because of a passion of yours. Remember that passion and realize that your business is personal. As such, your personal growth is just as important as the attention you provide to your business.
“There is no distinction between personal development and business growth when you are the business.” — Kimanzi Constable
To promote business growth, work to master these four areas of personal development:
- Thoughts. I’m sure we can all think of examples of times where our internal thoughts both helped and hurt us. To increase your business success, it’s important to master control over your thoughts to harness them in a positive, inspiring direction. Remember, it’s okay to get upset, angry, or frustrated. However, with a keen sense of self reflection, you can more quickly recognize, process, and move past any negative emotions that may be holding you back.
- Energy. I don’t think anyone has found the Fountain of Youth yet, so we’re left to find another alternative for energy. Your emotions can play into your energy levels, so it’s important to get your thoughts in check. Negativity breeds negativity, and that is the ultimate energy-sucker. Even though entrepreneurs stereotypically work 80 hours per week just to work for themselves, it’s important to take time for yourself. Take a bike ride, go for a walk, watch a movie, be phone-free for 1 hour and read a book. Whatever it is that fuels you – make time for it. After all, if you don’t have the energy to move your business forward, it won’t.
- Motivation. What is your motivation? Have you lost sight of it in all the chaos of your day-to-day dealings? Take some time to recall your original motivation and passion that got you here. Review your business goals. Find a strategy that works for you to cultivate motivation and share that with your team.
- Goals. Consider your goals. Your personal goals. If you could do anything in life – AIM HIGH – what would it be? Realize that the achievement of your business goals are what will provide you with the means to success in your personal goals. You want to save for a down payment on a home? You want to have the flexibility and means to take a two week vacation to Hawaii? You need an hour here to take your child to to the doctor and the afternoon to go to their kindergarten graduation? You can have it.
