We all have goals, some short-term, some long-term; some easily attainable, some seemingly impossible. Can the overwhelming focus and drive to reach a goal actually stop you from getting there? Jeff Haden recently sat down with James Clear, an entrepreneur and photographer, who relayed some solid on how to efficiently set and achieve goals. (link below)
First off, James suggests shifting your focus from goals to systems. Making a goal doesn’t mean you’ll get there. How are you going to get there? What is your plan? Makes sense.
James also suggests (and this may be the hardest part) you give up the need for immediate results. While it is counter intuitive to ignore the need for instant gratification, those that can delay that need are often most successful. Don’t give up the end game for small rewards!
Finally, to accomplish a goal you need to monitor your progress along the way. Are you still on the right track? Is the process you have in place still working? Part of being successful is knowing when you need to make adjustments and recognizing when things aren’t working.
So, next time you’re setting a goal, don’t forget these tips:
1. Commit to a process, not a goal
2. Give up the need for immediate results
3. Build smart feedback loops
